Brutalist oak lounge chair and ottoman in original goat hide, 1960s

Brutalist oak lounge chair and ottoman in original goat hide, 1960s

Distinctive Brutalist lounge chair with matching ottoman, crafted in solid oak and upholstered in its original natural goat hide, dating from approximately the 1960s.

The chair is built around a substantial solid oak frame with a tall, gently inclined backrest, broad horizontal armrests and an unusually elaborate lower construction. Particularly characteristic is the scalloped front rail beneath the seat, together with the strongly articulated block-shaped front supports and curved rear uprights.

The loose seat and back cushions are upholstered in naturally mottled goat hide, complemented by upholstered side sections that give the chair an almost wingback-like silhouette. The reverse is equally well considered, with the hide-covered back framed by exposed solid oak.

The matching ottoman combines the same warm oak and goat hide, with rounded legs, slender stretchers and traditional webbing beneath the upholstered top.

The overall design combines robust construction with elements associated with Scandinavian and European rustic modernism of the 1960s.

The original goat hide has developed a warm and varied patina, with natural differences in colour, texture and hair direction that form an essential part of the character of the set. The oak likewise shows age-related patina and light traces of use.
