Set of four Thonet S32 Chairs by Marcel Breuer, 1983

Designed in the late 1920s by Marcel Breuer, the S32 chair remains one of the most influential and enduring icons of modern furniture design. Breuer — a central figure of the Bauhaus movement — was among the first to explore the potential of tubular steel as a structural and aesthetic material. Inspired by the frame of a bicycle, he saw in steel tubing a way to merge lightness, strength, and industrial precision into a completely new kind of furniture.

The S32 embodies this vision perfectly. Its cantilever construction eliminates the need for traditional rear legs, creating a dynamic sense of balance and suspension. The sitter seems to float, supported by the natural flexibility of the steel. This interplay between engineering and comfort is what gives the design its unique energy — an elegant tension between gravity and air.

This set of four authentic S32 chairs was produced by Thonet in 1983, as stamped beneath the seat frame. Thonet, a name synonymous with innovation since the 19th century, was the first company to industrialize furniture making and later became the key manufacturer for Breuer’s tubular steel designs. By the time these chairs were made, Thonet’s legacy had fully fused the Bauhaus ideal — the union of art, craftsmanship, and technology — into its production philosophy.

Each chair features a chromed tubular steel frame paired with solid beech seat and backrest frames, both finely finished in a warm natural tone. The handwoven cane adds a tactile and organic quality that contrasts beautifully with the cool rationality of the metal frame. It’s this duality — between nature and industry, warmth and precision — that has made the S32 an enduring favorite among architects and collectors alike.

The set remains in lovely vintage condition. The cane of one seat has been professionally renewed, while the others retain their original weave, showing light and even patina. The chrome structure is clean and lustrous, and the beech frames display only minimal traces of age. This careful balance between preservation and authenticity makes the set a perfect example of how Bauhaus design can age gracefully without losing its integrity.

Still in production today, the S32 has proven itself timeless — a chair that feels as contemporary now as it did nearly a century ago. This 1983 Thonet set, with its clarity of form and subtle craftsmanship, is more than a piece of furniture: it’s a chapter of design history, ready to bring architectural refinement and warmth to any modern interior.
