Set of six dining chairs designed by Jean Batenburg for MI, Belgium, circa 1969

These chairs are characteristic of Jean Batenburg’s architectural design language, combining a strict geometric wooden structure with restrained upholstered elements. The dark-stained frames are constructed with continuous rectangular legs and low stretchers, giving the chairs a strong, grounded appearance.
 
The seats and backrests are upholstered in a grey textured fabric, which softens the strict linearity of the design. Particularly distinctive is the backrest, where the upholstery is framed by visible wooden corner blocks, adding a subtle decorative accent within the otherwise sober composition.
 
The overall design is calm, functional and well balanced, with a modernist character typical of Belgian furniture from the period. These chairs form part of the same dining room series as the Jean Batenburg dining table produced by MI, Belgium.

The wooden frames show visible age-related wear, particularly along the edges and corners, where the lighter wood beneath the dark finish has become exposed. The upholstery shows some signs of use consistent with age.
